On Christmas Day 1914, Allied and German soldiers signed a truce in the war of trenches and played a football match parked the war for 24 hours
100 years ago, on a cold Christmas morning, in full battle trenches in World War I, an impromptu practice match between British and German soldiers in Belgium, which had been invaded by the Germans was played. It was in the vicinity of the Walloon population of Comines-Warneton. It was a day of unexpected truce, 'enacted' by the contestants themselves, after days of bloody battle with thousands dead.
