Report of general of artillery Wilhelm Fahrmbacher bound for Germany :

"Order of capitulation without conditions carried out. Surrender of the stronghold on May 10, 1945 at 4:00 pm. I capitulate at the head of my available and undefeated troops. We are thinking of the trials of the Fatherland. Long live Germany".

Two days after the official end of WW2 in Europe, the city of Lorient, a stronghold of primary importance for the armed forces of the 3rd Reich, is liberated.

After having been designated by Hitler in his testament as his successor and held the position of President of the Reich (Reichspräsident) during the three weeks of the Flensburg Government , Großadmiral Karl Dönitz is placed under arrest by the Allies. Among other nazi leaders, he will have to explain his case at the Nuremberg trials .

During the Battle of the Denmark Strait , where the most powerful German and British battleships clash, the Bismarck fires its fifth salvo at 6:00 a.m. One of the eight 380mm shells, fired at a distance of approximately 14km, crosses the upper deck of HMS Hood and detonates in the ammunition compartment. The ensuing huge explosion breaks the Hood in two. The British champion sinks in a few minutes, killing 1419 crew members. There will be only 3 survivors.
